Merck/AAAS Cross-disciplinary (MAC) Scholars Program Grant
The Appalachian State University MAC Scholars Program is an intensive undergraduate summer research experience at the interface of Chemistry and Biology for 8 students. Recipients will receive a stipend of $3,000 over a 10-week period for participating in summer research.
The application deadline is Friday, March 7, 2008.
Recipients will be required to:
- take a course during the first summer session that will focus on using instrumentation and practicing Responsible Conduct in Research.
- participate in bi-weekly lunch meetings in which they will present progress reports on their research.
- write a report detailing their research and present their results in a joint Chemistry/Biology seminar.
- present posters on their research at the Celebration of Student Research and Creative Endeavors and are encouraged to present at external meetings.
- attend monthly MAC Scholars seminars during the school year.
Proposed Projects
The proposed projects surround a central question at the interface of Chemistry and Biology "How do small molecules affect/interact with whole organisms?" This question will be addressed in the context of applied organic chemistry, environmental science, plant biology and molecular biology.
Eligibility
The eligible student will have completed his/her sophomore year and declared a major in either Biology or Chemistry.
